Meet the Mayas
September 1 – 27, 2012
Meet the Mayas is being held at Shilin Public Assembly Hall from September 1 to 27 as part of the Shilin International Culture Festival. The event is co-organized by the Taipei City Government and the Embassies of Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, the Mexican Trade Services Documentation and Cultural Office, the Department of Civil Affairs, Shilin District Office, among others.

The Maya was one of the great civilizations in the world, extending throughout the northern Central American region, including present-day Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico. During the Classic period (250–900 AD) most Mayan states reached their peak and erected large-scale buildings. The Mayan temples are the most notable monuments from this period and were built in most important Mayan cities. The Mayas were noted for their beautiful epigraph writing and intelligence. They were sophisticated mathematicians and astronomers, as well as talented calligraphers, architects, artists and sculptors. Visitors will be able to glimpse the enigmatic Maya culture through photographs, detailed descriptions, and cultural artifacts on show.

Several WTIC directors and members of the work committee attended the exhibition's opening ceremony and found it to be an immensely enjoyable and educational experience.
