Dear WTIC Members:

The morning of April 2nd, a Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) Taroko 408 train derailed at the Daquingshui Tunnel in Hualien County. Sadly this accident caused severe fatalities, as 48 were confirmed dead and at least 200 injured. In response to the train derailment, the central and local governments immediately mobilized emergency rescue procedures, and private charitable groups and volunteers also devoted their efforts and time to assist the rescue.

This is TRA’s most deadly train accident in decades. It was breaking news to local and international media, leaders from international communities extended their sincere sympathies to the families of those who have perished and offered their assistance in such a difficult time. Our government has ordered all public institutions and schools, starting from April 3rd, for three days, to lower our national flag to half-staff, as a mark of respect and memory. During such a time of torment, I would like to urge all our WTIC members to present our deepest and sincere condolences to the victims, the injured and their families and friends.

Best regards,
Jeannie Tien
WTIC President
