匈牙利美食饗宴

2015.06.11

The nation of Hungary, referred to as “the cultural heaven” and the “Paris of Eastern Europe”, is renowned for its natural and healthy cuisine that transforms everyday ingredients in simple ways to produce flavors both rich and subtle. Organized by the International Food Demonstration Group of Welcome to Taipei International Club(WTIC), the Hungarian Food Demonstration was attended by nearly 100 guests with delights on June 22 at the World Trade Center Club.

Mdm. Hedi Sztano wore a traditional Hungarian dress and presented Hungarian folk dances, accompanied with the melody of violin performed by her husband, Hon. Jozsef Sztano, the Representative of Hungarian Trade Office. Some students from Taiwan University of Arts also joined the party, adding to the event’s highlights. Undoubtedly, all of their performances stunned the audience and sparked the hall.

It’s kitchen time! Hedi started with the Hungarian crepes, or Palacsinta, an everyday meal of Hungarian families, which is perfect for breakfast. Hedi combined eggs, flour, milk, and sugar in carefully measured amounts to make a soft, savory pancake which can be served with fresh fruits or any favorite filling. Furthermore, her demonstration of pan-flipping caused a sensation and won thunderous applauses.

Goulash, one of the characteristic cuisines of Hungary, is a stew with gravy using meat with bones, paprika, vegetables and pasta simmered together. The dish looked simple and easy to make, yet amazingly tasty. For a sweet surprise, Hedi made the Gisella Cake which blended in with tradition and heritage, not to mention that this recipe has been passed down for generations in Hedi’s family!

The Food Demonstration ended with high praises from satisfied guests. To them, it’s a reminiscent taste of Hungarian culture and surely unforgettable to all for a long time. While WTIC celebrated the success of the event, members were reluctant to say goodbye for Hedi’s leaving so soon. We greatly treasure the friendship and wish all the best to her and her family.
