The International Cooking Demonstration Group of Welcome to Taipei International Club (WTIC), in collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of Paraguay to the Republic of China, organized an event to showcase Paraguayan cuisine and culture at TWTC Club on Thursday March 26, 2015.
The event started with a country introduction about the beauty of Paraguay by Paraguayan scholarship students, followed by the cooking demonstration of “vori vori de pollo” (chicken soup with ricotta dumplings) by Mrs. Norma Dias de Bobadilla, spouse of the Paraguayan Ambassador to Taiwan, Marcial Bobadilla Guillén. The presentation ends with the Paraguayan folkloric dance by scholarship students.
Over one hundred guests from the diplomatic circle attended the event; all of them enjoyed the Paraguayan cuisine which consisted of delicacies such as Empanadas (炸肉餃), Chipa (奇巴麵包), Chipa guasu (烤玉米起士糕), Milanesa (炸豬排) and Sopa paraguaya (巴拉圭湯).
The Sopa paraguaya – the Paraguayan soup – got the attention of the guests since they could not drink it. According to Paraguayan people it’s the only solid soup in the world. A story of the origin of the dish involves Don Carlos Antonio López (the founder of the Paraguayan state and president of the country between 1841 and 1862) and one of his cooks. It is said that the great governor liked a white soup elaborated with milk, Paraguay cheese, egg and corn flour. One day the cook mistakenly added too much corn flour to the mixture. Near noon, she found the mixture was too thick, so she poured the mixture into an iron container and cooked it in a rustic Guarani oven made of clay and adobe, from which she obtained a "solid soup". Don Carlos, after tasting it, found it very delicious and immediately named it "sopa paraguaya".
