March 19, 2013

Welcome to Taipei International Club's International Cooking Demonstration Group, held their Taiwanese culinary event at 85th floor of Taipei 101 on March 19. The main theme is "Good Luck Radish – Discovering Ingenuity of Taiwanese Cuisine". The chefs of Shin Yeh @ Taipei 101 made various demonstrations on creating innovative and charming dishes of white radish, from its stem and skin down to root. Approximately 130 participants included the wives of diplomatic corps and foreign friends in Taipei attended this interesting and informative luncheon.

The pronunciation of the character "Radish" in Taiwanese pleasantly rhymes with that of the Luck (Tsai Tou). It is thus often made the best use for the purpose of an auspicious symbol. In addition, it is one of the popular ingredients widely used in the Taiwanese cuisine. Master Chef Chen of Shin Yeh Restaurant not only showed the superb techniques of cutting and carving white radish, but also utilized them to present 6 well-known Taiwanese dishes, such as Pickled Radish Skin、 Steamed Radish Cake and their famous Dried Radish Omelet (菜脯蛋) and Qing Ming Spring Roll (潤餅), in which Chef Chen emphasized the importance of mixing up the dried radish.

Mrs. Loretta Marut, wife of the AIT Director Christopher Marut and Mrs. Waldtraut Dapunt, wife of the Chile's Representative Pablo Dapunt were invited to make Qing Ming Spring Rolls with Chef Chen. All other attendees were given opportunities in DIY Qing Ming Spring Rolls at their tables.

Beautiful and artistic radish carvings were displayed as a centerpiece, which received overwhelming praises from attendees, particularly from spouses of diplomatic corps. Imbued with the magnificent view over the Taipei 101, the attendees enjoyed themselves the typical Taiwanese delicacies immensely.
